The Sardonic Smile by Chris Buzelli

Chris Buzelli recently completed a cover for The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association. The cover project was to illustrate "the sardonic smile" as a medical term.

From Chris's blog:
"I knew about the cynical/vengeful expression of a sardonic smile but I had no idea about it as a medical term. In medicine, it is defined as a smile-like facial expression induced by involuntary muscle spasms most often caused by toxins released by tetanus bacteria. However in folklore, the sardonic smile has a much more interesting past. It might have to do with the ingestion of the sardonion plant from Sardinia which cause muscle spasms, laughter and death. "

Chris Buzelli illustration for NPR

Chris Buzelli, an avid NPR listener, was invited to participate in their 2012 calendar. Every year NPR chooses 12 artists to illustrate each month of the year. Chris's piece was based on his favorite RadioLab episode called "New Nice" which was about a Russian geneticist who domesticated the fox. After several generations of selective breeding, he was successful in creating a gentler, human-friendly pet fox.
Keep an eye out for this new 2012 calendar which is available for purchase from NPR.

Cathie Bleck recently worked on a Nestlé piece through J. Walter Thompson, in Akron, OH. The project is a beautiful cookbook targeted at the Latino community, is beautifully printed – so well indeed that you you can feel the raised ink which feels like raised velvet highlighting the intricate line work. The cookbook has a photo pocket that each family can slip their own family photo inside on the cover. Inside it is filled with wonderful Latin traditions which are also common to many cultures as suggested recipes and a place to write your own favorite recipes, memories and traditions.

Check out this amazing new image by Charles Glaubitz titled, "Samurai Girl"! This is a personal piece that he created during a workshop that he gave in his studio, and he used his technique of ink and wash illustration with digital color added. The concept of the project was about conveying a memory to communicate time and space. This image was inspired by his oldest daughter, Luna, and also in part by his father who was a karate champion and instructor in Mexico - hence the samurai element. Charles based the color palette on the passing of time chose seasonal Autumn colors.

Terri Fry Kasuba just learned that one of her popular Yeti characters has been chosen for inclusion in the upcoming Pictoplasma Missing Link Research Exhibition. More than 5,000 hairy creature characters were submitted for consideration by artists working in a variety of disciplines from around the world. The 500 images that were chosen will be presented as part of an installation at the heart of the upcoming exhibition in Paris, at the new museum la Gaîté Lyrique, taking place from December 7 - 31. Marco Wagner's krocan

Since Thanksgiving is upon us, it seemed appropriate to feature this gorgeous piece by Marco Wagner. The title of the painting is Krocan, which is the Czech word for turkey, and Marco created it for a contemporary art fair in Essen, Germany. C.A.R.: Contemporary Art Ruhr was held in an amazing old factory in the "Zeche Zollverein", a former industrial area which is part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

In Marco's own words, "My body of work shows the world of hunting and killing, man and nature, fun and food. I chose this theme as it provides a huge range of imagery that I wanted to transform and
interpret. Furthermore this theme was helpful to feel free and try out new techniques like ink-drawings, linocut, oil colors, etc. You can say it was a trial and error experience. Especially the Turkey (krocan is the czech word). My aim was to simplify the complex feathers of this animal and play with decoration and color. The technique is acrylic and bronze color on board."

Ask Design B*tch: How can I get clients to approve buying custom illustrations?

Terry Lee Stone, fab designer and advocate of illustration, recently asked me to contribute to her column on the Rockport Publisher's new design blog, RockPaperInk. Her column is called "Ask Design B*tch", and she was working on a post about how to communicate the value of illustration to clients. Of course, I was happy to add to the argument of why clients should consider commissioning illustration before going the way of stock photos! Thanks to Terry for asking me for my 2 cents - now help us to spread the word that ILLUSTRATION RULES!

Q. Dear Design B*tch I love illustration. I want to include more commissioned illustrations in my designs. How do I convince my clients to go for it?

A. I'm with you. I love illustration too. It adds a very special quality to any design project. Sometimes it is tough to get clients to make the leap of faith required to approve the creation of a custom illustration from scratch. They need to pay for something sight unseen, and that scares away some folks. Designers often get pressured into using stock photography instead. Here's where designers can be advocates for illustrators, and do a little selling on their behalf.
Why use illustration?

Illustration is a way to visualize ideas that can express a variety of different types of subject matter and functions in a way that no other representational medium is able to do. Illustration can:

Provide visual representation of something described in a piece of text
Evoke emotion
Offer a variety of styles that can communicate subtle themes
Visualize, step-by-step, a set of instructions
Clarify complex information, ideas, or objects that are difficult to describe
Represent something that is not actually created yet (e.g. a prototype)
Support a narrative through the unique personal expression of the artist
Stress the subject matter more than the actual form of an image concept
Expand on the linguistic aspects of the information being presented
Give characters in a story a face or likeness
Decorate and enhance a piece
Link brands to ideas of humanity, self-expression, and creativity
Set a tone, from whimsical to serious

As with any creative pro, illustrators appreciate a well thought out creative brief. Bring a talented illustrator into the concepting process and you may be amazed at what they come up with. I know that some of you are shaking your heads and saying, "that's nice Design B*tch, but what if I don't like what the illustrator comes up with? Then what do I do?" OK, fair enough. I put those questions to Jenn Vaughn who has represented illustrators for 18 years. Here is her advice:

"All illustration projects involve the artist submitting a series of preliminary sketches based on the provided creative brief/concept. Each round of sketches includes revisions and tweaks based on client feedback. Through this process, the client gets a clear sense of the overall direction and feel of the artwork to come, which is why there should not be any big surprises when the final artwork is received.

In the rare event that the client is not satisfied with the final art, they should consult the artist or rep and give the artist the first option to make alterations. Sometimes, just talking with the artist and hearing firsthand their point of view on the piece, can give the client further perspective on the work and possibly even change their opinion that any changes are necessary. However, if the client is still not satisfied, then in most cases the artist will make the necessary changes, within reason. The client must keep in mind that, depending on the artist's medium, the level of revisions possible may vary and an additional revision fee may be required.

At the end of the day, the illustrator's goal is to help the client solve a visual problem, and they want to serve the client to that end. Although no two artists—or jobs—are exactly alike, illustration is a handmade experience that can tell a story from a unique and interesting point of view."

This image in the current Pennsylvania Gazette is for a story written by Shrestha Singh an undergrad at the University of Pennsylvania. Shrestha spent a semester documenting the lives of homeless women who are on a running team near Temple University. The women are a part of program called "Back on my Feet" which promotes running as a tool of empowerment, a metaphor for moving forward in life. I always love reading and illustrating these stories in the Gazette, thank you Cathy for another fun job.

Santiago Uceda recently told us about a sketchbook collaboration project he's been working on with artist, Jon MacNair. A few months ago Santiago and Jon came up with the idea of trading sketchbooks, and ever since then they've been simultaneously drawing and painting in each of them. Such a cool and inspiring idea! Lucie Rice recently worked on a project for the Grand Ole Opry's new restaurant, the Opry Backstage Grill. In Lucie's own words, "They had me design their logo, do their kids' menu, decorate guitars for display, and illustrate and design the inserts to their menu, featuring food themed stories from a few of their members."
Sounds like such a fun project! If you're in Nashville, you should go to the restaurant to check out the guitars that Lucie decorated, but here's a glimpse of some of the menu inserts she illustrated:

Chris Buzelli illustrates Coldplay for Rolling Stone Magazine

Chris Buzelli recently finished an illustration of Coldplay for Rolling Stone Magazine. Chris worked with Steven Charny, of the magazine, to illustrate the piece about the band's new album, Mylo Xyloto, for the music review section.

Per Chris' Blog:

Coldplay was being very secretive about their new album and all we had to go with was this mysterious album title and their first single release called Paradise. I'm really proud to be a part of this special issue. The cover has a great unrecognizable pic of Steve Jobs as a young hippie genius. The inside is covered with about 15 illustrated gems by Thomas Fuchs of famous musicians and their favorite songs. As well as a perfectly short and focused article about Occupy Wall Street with a common sense list of demands by Matt Taibbi called My Advice to the Protesters.

Craig LaRotonda for The Sutras

Craig LaRotonda recently worked on the package design and illustrations for a new CD by The Sutras, titled Call Out We'll Find You. This is the second studio release for the band, and they contacted Craig after seeing his painting, "I Become the Tool". The painting is based on St. John the Baptist waiting for Christ. The band asked if they could use the piece on their CD cover, and not only did Craig say yes, but he ended up designing the entire package. Very cool!

Changing habits with Claudine Hellmuth

Claudine Hellmuth recently created these illustrations for Smart car's global online project, Smart Urban Stage . The project deals with the concept of the Future of the City, and as part of this, pioneers from metropolises around the world are asked to question the status quo...and in turn, artists working in various disciplines create a visual to address the question. The following pieces were created as a response to a question Claudine was asked by Alexander Mankowsky, a Social and Technology Researcher at Daimler AG.

Yuko Shimizu's interview with Chris Buzelli is up on Illustration Friday. Chris was asked some very insightful questions, and it's interesting to learn a bit about his history and to get a glimpse into his creative process. And it's great to see Chris getting the recognition he truly deserves!

[YS] Since 1998 you have been taking 3.5 hour bus ride each way up to RISD to teach. Now you are such high-demand illustrator, do you feel like this gets in your way of your work, or it fuels your work? If you have figured out how to utilize 7 hours of sitting on a bus, I am very curious to know. 7 hours is a long time!

[CB] Yes, I’ve been teaching up at RISD for the past 10 years and I take the bus once a week from NYC to Providence. I actually look forward to the bus ride. I’m a workaholic and I live in my studio. So the bus ride has become a sort of a break from the normal schedule of painting all day. I think my mind needs a vacation to do other things. The bus ride is filled with catching up on emails, reading books, watching movies or just daydreaming. The class is 5 hours long and it just flies by. I think it’s because I really enjoy teaching what I love to others. And the student’s enthusiasm and their passion for illustration makes the experience even more fulfilling. Of course, that one-day away from the studio really cuts into my work time, especially with tight deadlines. And sometimes I do lose money by missing assignments or turning down projects. It is getting more difficult because my workload has increased and/or I’m just getting slower, but I still think it’s worth it. I believe the whole experience fuels my work. (Go to full article)

Charles Glaubitz freak art.

A couple of weeks ago, Charles found this unused black and white ink on watercolor paper in his flat file as he was doing his studio cleaning. A illustration for a proposed Freak film festival poster from 2010. The project was killed before this illustration even got to the computer to be colored, Charles recently colored it. We think it rocks and look very cool next to the other two freak illustrations.

In her own words:
I began this large-scale visual journal in mid July this summer of 2011. In this project I wanted to explore the dualities that exist in nature and our evolution both past and present. Reflecting on the subject of where I left off from my Butler museum show in 2008 “Becoming Human”, and wanted to additionally explore what would happen if I introduced forms which mimicked one another. In this first set of panels an unexpected image of a giant face of a cat or lion formed in the center when they were joined. Mysteriously, the image of the tiger or lion keeps resurfacing itself intuitively in other works as well. I am hoping to have these scrolls exhibited in a museum this year.

Each panel is 50"x170" and is done on Stonehenge paper (100% cotton, acid-free buffered with calcium carbonate to help protect artwork from contaminated environments). This surface is proving to be durable and excellent with graphite, both pencils as well as powdered graphite mixed with water and additional liquid kaolin in the white areas.

The past is represented on the right panel where man has evolved rhythmically in unison with nature. The female figure sits at the bottom swallowed within the roots of the tree grasping beads, which are thought to be the first gifts of man to one another. Anthropologists believe that it was with these clay beads that man stopped killing trespassers to their territories. On the left panel, starting from the bottom reeds in the water weep below the explosions of our present time. The lone locust searches above the other locusts in search of direction. Evolving above the locust is ambiguity asking how will we evolve from this juncture as we lie in the eye of a broken world?

Charles Glaubitz - Hot Off the Presses

A recent piece by Charles Glaubitz is featured in the current issue of PlanAdviser magazine. Charles has been commissioned by Asset International to create many illustrations for this and other publications over the years, but this is the first time that they have picked up an existing piece by Charles. SooJin Buzelli, the creative director of Asset International, noticed the illustration in a recent Facebook posting we did, and she thought it would be perfect for the "Hot Off the Presses" feature in the 5th Anniversary Issue of the magazine. What we found especially interesting was that she chose to use the illo in a horizontal format rather than vertically, as it was originally created. We think it works super well!

Chris Buzelli and the mythical Krampus

Chris Buzelli finished a new piece called "And the Children Shall Inherit the Earth". The piece is based on the legend of Krampus, a mythical creature recognized in alpine countries.

The piece will be showcased at The Blab! Show which is at Seattle’s Roq La Rue Gallery. The show opens this Friday, August 12th, 2011.

"This Friday night, August 12th, at Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, my painting "And the Children Shall Inherit the Earth" will be in The Blab Show curated by Monte Beauchamp. The show revolves around the theme of Krampus. Who is Krampus? In early 19th century European folklore, Krampus was a creepy devilish figure who accompanied St Nicolas during the Christmas season. If you were a good boy or girl, St. Nick gave you gifts, but if you were bad then you got a visit by Krampus who would punish and spank you with his switch and hopefully not carry you away in his sack! I really think we need to bring the Krampus tradition back."

Octopuses? Octopi? Octopodes? Which ever word you prefer, Joel Nakamura has been exploring them in his work for some time now. In fact, he's been playing around with the octopus image so much lately that he has started creating them made out of some rather unexpected things...such as gummy bears and watermelon. Kim Rosen's latest illustration, for the Canadian Lawyer InHouse Magazine, is entitled "Shareholder".

From Kim's blog:
"If Canadian in-house counsel did not feel overwhelmed enough in their role protecting their companies’ interests, a new threat reached their radar screens over the course of the past year: shareholder activism."

Shareholders want more and more say over how the companies that they have stock in are run. According to this article, there are three types of shareholders: Value maximizers who are looking to get the most out of their investments, Corporate governance watchdogs who focus on how executives are compensated and Corporate activists who care most about social responsibilities.

Jen Lobo did this illustration of "Amoolia Earhart" and her Space Ship Moo for this year's EAA AirVenture aviation celebration in OshKosh, Wisconsin. Marco Wagner created this piece for Deloitte Review, a semiannual magazine for business leaders. The illustration was for an article titled "Evolve or Fail", which raises the question of whether corporate IT security capabilities are evolving with business strategies. We think the juxtaposition of the old steel maze with the ultra modern high-rise in the middle is a great visual to illustrate that old defenses are no match for clever hackers of today....

Kim Rosen - When your doctor sells credit cards

Kim Rosen illustrated a story for the Saturday edition of the Wall Street Journal called "When Your Doctor Sells Credit Cards". Not only do we love Kim's work here, but we also think everyone should read this article!

Some frightening quotes from the story:
"The medical credit cards also have drawn criticism for their billing terms. The cards typically offer interest-free payments for up to a year, but when new rates kick in, they can be sharply higher."

"...GE's CareCredit can surge to 26.99% after the promotional period ends, and the card charges "retroactive" interest rates as high as 26.99%—meaning that if you make late payments, you may be charged interest on the previous year's balance..."
