Jen Lobo illustrates The Story of Pines iBook
Jen Lobo has spent a lot of time this year working on this project, which we've had to keep under wraps until recently. Jen illustrated the book titled The Story of Pines, written by musician Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy, and it has finally been released as an iBook. Jen's illustrations bring this story to life, and you can learn more about the book on iTunes. Here is a peek at just a few of Jen's beautiful drawings:

Jen Lobo's illustrated nebulae
Jen Lobo recently worked on series of paintings based on space, and here are a few pieces that were specifically inspired by nebulae. Here is Jen's own description of her inspiration:
"I had been reading about space and the Hubble Telescope and star births and I absolutely fell in love with nebulae being described as star nurseries. I love the notion of these bright little bursts of light being born out of dust. The names of the nebulae were just begging to be illustrated. Space is such a wealth of inspiration, sometimes I'll read theories, I remember once I was reading about black holes and I get to a point where my brain literally cannot compute. The technical reasons for these magical occurrences are so complex. I just am not capable of grasping some of these concepts, but then the names harken back to ancient theories of the stars and gods. It's almost childlike."

Jen Lobo illustrates Kepler 22-b
This is another painting Jen Lobo did as a part of a series of illustrations inspired by scientific discoveries from the past year. This painting is based on a planet called Kepler 22-b, a newly discovered planet that could possibly be habitable. (Jen swears she's not making this up!) This is quite a change from the wonderful wildlife illustrations that we're so used to seeing from Jen:

Jen Lobo's carnivorous plant
Jen Lobo has been working on a series of illustrations based on recent scientific discoveries. For this one, she was inspired by the discovery of a carnivorous plant that feasts on bat dung, of all things! Most pitcher plants use their prey-trapping mechanism to trap and then devour their victims (think Venus Flytrap); however, in the case of this particular plant, which was discovered in Borneo, its "pitcher" makes a snug roost for tiny bats that unknowingly nourish the plant while they hang out and rest. It's a win-win!

Jen Lobo for The University of Chicago Magazine
Jen Lobo recently created this illustration for the March/April 2012 issue of the alumni magazine of The University of Chicago. The article is titled Bobo Soprano, and it is about "how monkeys, the Mafia, Italian academia—and, increasingly, American society—illustrate the biological impulse and social peril of nepotism". Jen has such an amazing talent for painting animals, and her style was perfect for this piece!

Jen Lobo - Sink or Swim
Jen Lobo is participating in a transcontinental art exhibition, Sink or Swim, featuring original works from 30 internationally renowned artists. The exhibit is on display at Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco for three days only - so if you're anywhere near SF this weekend - Sept. 23 - 25, you should check it out. And if you can't make it to the show, we've included a preview of Jen's piece below.
In Jen's own words:
I have the sincere privilege of participating in 'Sink or Swim - SF' a show organized by PangeaSeed, dedicated to spreading awareness about (and preventing) the devastating practice of shark finning.
Shark finning is one of those things that once you learn about it, you wish you could erase it from your memory immediately. It is just so heartbreaking to know that this is a common practice.

The Eyes of Jen Lobo
Jen Lobo has been doing a lot of drawings lately, and she just sent us these 2 brand new ones. It's a nice change to see her work in such a raw and simplistic style. Here's a bit of insight into her approach to these drawings in Jen's own words:
"I always render the eyes first. It's a little like eating dessert before your dinner, but I like that it feels alive right away. It feels like it sets the tone for the piece...plus, it can keep me company while I finish the rest of its body."
She also sent along these shots of the work in progress. It's amazing to see the bison come alive through the process...
