Joel Nakamura was commissioned by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science to create these illustrations for a new educational wing in the museum.  The images are going to be reproduced as large scale murals on three separate walls for this permanent installation.  BIG and beautiful!

Jennifer Vaughn Artist Agency group show in Dallas

We're coming back to Dallas, and this time it's for a gallery show featuring the work of 12 of our artists at TractorBeam Gallery from October 11 until November 9th, 2012.

Joel Nakamura illustrates Powerpuff Girls

Joel Nakamura is taking part in an upcoming group show which is a collaborative exhibition being put together by Mark Murphy and the Cartoon Network in honor of the Cartoon Network’s 20th Year Celebration. The show will open during Comic-Con San Diego this summer.  Each participating artist was asked to create an illustration based on their own interpretation of a Cartoon Network show. The various shows were assigned to each artist, and Joel Nakamura got Powerpuff Girls. Here is what he came up with!

Joel Nakamura - Eater of Bad Dreams

This is a new piece by Joel Nakamura, and it is his interpretation of "Baku".  Baku are Japanese supernatural beings that devour dreams and nightmares, and they have a long history in Japanese folklore and art.

 Joel donated prints of this piece and a miniature painting to be auctioned at an event called Hanami After Dark, which benefits TOMODACHI, an initiative led by the U.S.-Japan Council in an ongoing effort to support Japan’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake.  The event is one of many taking place during the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC.

Joel Nakamura's exploration of Octopuses? Octopi? Octopodes?

Octopuses? Octopi? Octopodes?  Which ever word you prefer, Joel Nakamura has been exploring them in his work for some time now.  In fact, he's been playing around with the octopus image so much lately that he has started creating them made out of some rather unexpected things...such as gummy bears and watermelon.  Here are 3 of his most recent octo-pieces:

Keep Evolving... The Grand Central Station iShares art installation.

 The iShares art installation in Grand Central Station has come down, but it was a great success and we're proud to have been a part of it.  The original artwork will be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to Uncommon Schools to benefit their arts education programs. Uncommon Schools is a nonprofit organization that starts and manages outstanding urban charter public schools (in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts) that close the achievement gap and prepare low-income students to graduate from college.  If you weren't able to see the art on display, then here's a glimpse of what you missed:
